Sean needs to earn. He needs money to keep his gang together, to hire the best, to buy loyalty. Any sign of weakness and he rightfully fears the Italians will move on him. He’d considered Callaghan and Murphy to be among the best and can’t think where he might recruit anyone of the same calibre. To take his mind off his worries, Mary, his ex-landlady, now his brothel manager and lover, suggests an evening of entertainment.

“There's a new boy with Joe King and the Creole Jazz Band. They say he's hot on the cornet. I think he's called Louis Armstrong.”

“Book us a table. Been a while since I've taken you out, Mrs O'Shea.”

“I've been thinking of changing my surname.”

“Yeah? What to?”

“How does Mary O'Leary sound? I wouldn't want our child to be born illegitimate.”

Sean is lost for words at first.

“What? You mean?”

“Yes, Mr O'Leary. I'm expecting our child. Will you make an honest woman of me?”

“How do you know/”

“Really, Sean?”

“Sorry. I'm a bit thrown. This is a surprise.”

“Me too. I waited until I was sure. I've missed two periods and can feel the changes.”

“And I'm the father?”

“Don't make me mad? You know I've always been exclusive for you. Since you came to stay at my boarding house. Just 'cause you brought me here to run your girls doesn’t mean I do tricks as well.”

“Sorry. Still in shock. A lot on my mind.”

“Well. Let's go and see the band tonight and talk about the future tomorrow.”

“You book a table. I'll book the church. We'll get this done quickly.”

“Oh, Sean. I love you.”

“I hope so, Mrs soon-to-be O'Leary.”
